Aiming to “put down more mats on mother earth as our way of incorporating everyone we could reach into the practice of yoga and meditation” – Ruah opened in 2014. And, for the last 7 years, they have been doing just that. Spring of 2021 they moved their studio to Annapolis Town Center and we believe a proper introduction is way overdue.

Q: For those who don’t know, can you tell me a little bit about Ruah Studio?
A: Ruah is a socially responsible yoga and meditation studio. Our practice is ongoing and ever-changing. We welcome beginners, silver starters, experts, and the stiff or reluctant—that means everyone. We are defined by our mission to put more mats on the mother, which means we not only serve the community that can come to us, but we also reach out to those underserved and without means or access.

Q: How long have you been with Ruah? Can you tell us more about Ruah’s start?
A: First and foremost, I love yoga. I started Ruah to fulfill my personal interest in bringing yoga to underserved communities through the generosity and enthusiasm of the community I am part of. In our eight years, we have trained many yogis to teach and spread our mission. We have given away as many classes as we have sold. We started the first and only program of yoga and meditation in our local detention centers and have donated mats to most of our local schools. Ruah has also spearheaded a huge warm coat drive for five years in conjunction with the public defender’s office. The teachers we have trained have created incredibly diverse programs from yoga for vets to yoga for caregivers in an oncology ward.

Q: Do you ever get to collaborate with other tenants?
A: Heck yeah! We were able to do yoga with your dog featuring treats from Sweet P & Salty Dog Swag, and I couldn’t serve the delicious wine after my Friday evening class without the help of BIN 201

Q: What is your favorite part of the Ruah community?
A: The people we serve.

Q: What is it like having your studio at the Annapolis Town Center? What are some of your favorite aspects of the new location?
A: We love the beautiful space and the way there is always someone wandering. We have met so many new friends and our old friends are finding their way. We love how the energy is bringing people back out and offering so many things to do before and after class.

Q: Ruah has been holding a ton of events recently! What has been one of the most memorable or your favorite?
A: I love our little Yoglets (kids) running around all week in summer camp. I was also very moved by our violinist, Alex, who played for a class out on the green.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who might be considering yoga for the first time?
A: Just come. There is a way for everyone to begin.

Q: What can guests look forward to for the rest of the year?
A: We will be offering meditation, special workshops for headstands and arm balances, a beginner series, and our teacher training is already beginning to fill up! Plus, our Grand Opening on October 9th.

Q: What is the best way for people to find out more about these events?
A: We are on Facebook and Instagram, but the easiest way to find our schedule is to go to our website at www.ruahstudio.com or download our app. We are huge fans of the old-fashioned drop by and say hi. We hope to see you on the mat or for a cocktail at any of the places we can walk to after class.

Full Moon Breathwork and Sound Healing with Trish Brewer

This Full Moon in Gemini is about getting what you want, need, and deeply desire in your relationships. It has us revisiting things from our past that brought us joy and passion in a practical deep way. The roots of what you truly need to have a deep, lasting committed relationship and that can include your finances. Venus also rules money. What is your belief about money? Chiron (the wounded healer) is moving direct on the 19th as Venus is revisiting the past. What a transitional time to make the changes needed to heal the way you feel about your relationships and that includes yourself, your self-worth, beliefs, power and control in relationships, old traumas, anxieties, old triggering wounds. What patterns keep repeating and coming up? This is a perfect time to release and heal them.

We will harness the power of our breath to do just that! Then we will sink into savasana while listening to the relaxing vibrations of the crystal singing bowls and gong.

Breathwork focuses on moving and releasing energy held in our bodies to improve our well-being. Trish D. Brewer is a Certified Breathwork Facilitator and will lead you through this active Breathwork technique wherein you can clear blocks, patterns and behaviors that keep you, from you. Clearing the energy, releasing what is heavy, painful, or stagnant, creates space for what wants to come through you—just like weeding a garden or cleaning your house.

Kimberley Lutz Madden is Certified in Sound Therapy and will take you on a healing journey with a beautiful sound bath. The tones and vibrations of the gong and singing bowls allow for deep shifts and openings to be received through the energetic body. Explore the gifts you receive from being embraced in a sacred space of relaxation, sound, and healing to rest your mind and restore your body.

Sound Healing with Suzanne Sweet

Sign up for Ruah’s sound healing session with Suzanne Sweet on Sunday, November 14.

What is Sound Therapy?
Sound Therapy is a natural healing modality based on the principle that everything has its own vibration. By using vibration through sound, combined with compassionate intention, healing throughout the body can be promoted.

Who benefits?
Each individual responds differently to Sound Therapy and may receive different benefits. The most commonly reported benefit is that it may bring about deep relaxation and a sense of overall wellness. Anyone can benefit from Sound Therapy. It works well as a supporting modality for those who already consider themselves to be in good health. It can also be a wonderful stand-alone therapy or a complement to any other medical or non-medical program you may be involved in. There are no guaranteed results, but it can be beneficial to those who have health challenges associated with anxiety, insomnia, pregnancy, emotional, physical, or spiritual stress, or any body system or function.

What sound tools are used?
Sound tools, such as the Tibetan singing bowls, quartz crystal singing bowls, Zenergy chimes, Koshi chimes, practitioner crystal singing bowl, rainstick, ocean drums, bells, tingshaw, Native American wooden flute, vocal toning, and meditation, along with aromatherapy, will be used to bring the participant into a state of deep relaxation and wellness.

Suzanne Sweet is a certified reflexologist, a Certified Natural Health Professional (CNHP), a trained Sound Therapist, a member of the Maryland Reflexology Association, the Reflexology Association of America, and the Bowie-Crofton Holistic Community. She opened her business in 2006 and continues to learn and add services and products for the benefit of others, searching for ways to help improve their own health and wellness through natural means.
